    POLICE TRAINING PROGRAM

    Applications may be submitted at any time.

    West Virginia Legislative Rule §149-2-16 provides that an applicant may be denied admission to a basic entry-level training program for activities that may include, but not be limited to the following;

    • Willful falsification of any information submitted or relied upon to obtain certified status
    • Addiction to or unlawful sale, possession, or use of narcotics, drugs, or drug paraphernalia

    • An inability to lawfully carry a firearm under state and/or federal statute
    • Any conduct or a pattern of conduct unbecoming to a law enforcement officer or law enforcement official or activities that would tend to disrupt, diminish, or otherwise jeopardize public trust and fidelity in law enforcement

    Upon receipt, Police Academy staff will review all applications for admission into the Basic Police Training Program. Applicants who meet the preliminary requirements for admission shall be provisionally admitted to the program. Final admission into the program is a selective process requiring the successful completion of several different steps as mandated by WV Legislative Rule §149-2-16 “Law Enforcement Training and Certification Standards.” Students provisionally admitted into the program will receive information from Academy staff regarding completion of the following steps in the selection process:

    • LEPS approved Medical Examination Form including results of drug screen
    • Form verifying satisfactory completion of the Physical Ability Test (NOTE: Candidates will be required to also satisfactorily complete the Physical Ability test upon reporting to the Academy)
    • Report from a licensed psychologist/psychiatrist verifying candidate’s suitability for a law enforcement career
    • Findings pursuant to a polygraph examination
    • A satisfactorily completed criminal history/personal background report
    • A completed FBI Applicant Fingerprint Card w/WVSP39F Release of Information

    Students satisfactorily completing the selection process will be formally admitted to the program. The Basic Police Training Program is normally offered during the Fall and Spring semesters. Students will be scheduled for the next available course following completion of all steps required in the selection process.
